What Are “Etsy Witches”? Is the question I was asking myself when the topic came up on the radio this morning.  The morning hosts were specifically talking about the Etsy witches – uh – witch hunt.  See what I did there? It seems that Etsy shutting down these “magic shops” is putting them out of business.  Personally, I have no problem with that.

That’s because our founder Al Manning was the pioneer of occult services for sale and he had been doing it for decades before most (all?) of these kids were born.  It’s not a stretch to say that occult services for sale all started with Astral Al.

But I digress…

The term Etsy witches refers to individuals who sell spiritual or magical goods and services through Etsy. These sellers typically offer items such as spell candles, crystals, charms, ritual kits, tarot readings, astrology charts, and energy-clearing services—often described using the language of intention, manifestation, or magic.

I confess I had no clue that Etsy witches were an ecosystem all on its own so I had to do some research to get caught up.

While some sellers identify openly as witches or occult practitioners, others present themselves as spiritual artists, intuitive readers, or metaphysical guides. What they have in common is not a shared belief system, but the use of symbolic or spiritual framing to market products and experiences.

From a skeptical standpoint, Etsy witches represent less a revival of ancient magic and more a modern fusion of spirituality, aesthetics, and e-commerce.

Why Etsy Became a Hub for Online Witchcraft

Etsy’s structure unintentionally created ideal conditions for spiritual sellers:

• Handmade and “intentional” branding fits ritual language well
• Customization options allow sellers to personalize items with names or birthdates
• Digital delivery enables instant tarot readings or spell work
• Global reach connects sellers with buyers lacking local metaphysical shops

In practice, Etsy functions as a decentralized spiritual marketplace, similar to how self-help authors and wellness influencers use blogs or social media—only with a checkout button attached.

What Do Etsy Witches Actually Sell?

Physical Products

Common items include:

• Spell candles (often color-coded for love, money, or protection)
• Crystal or talisman jewelry
• Herbal blends for baths or incense
• Beginner altar kits
• Printed or handmade spell books

From a critical perspective, these are symbolic objects. Their effectiveness depends largely on belief, ritual engagement, and personal interpretation rather than any verifiable external force.

Digital Services

Digital offerings are often more controversial:

• Tarot and oracle readings (PDF or message-based)
• Astrology reports
• Custom spell casting or manifestation rituals
• Energy clearing or “block removal”

These services typically rely on subjective interpretation and generalized language. Skeptical buyers should recognize that many readings use broad statements that can apply to nearly anyone—a well-documented psychological effect known as the Barnum or Forer effect.

Are Etsy Witches Legitimate Practitioners?

This depends entirely on how legitimacy is defined.

From a skeptical or consumer-protection standpoint:

• There is no standardized credentialing for witches or spell workers
• Anyone can open an Etsy shop and claim expertise
• Claims are rarely falsifiable or measurable

Some sellers are sincere, well-read, and careful not to overpromise. Others use vague or absolute claims that imply guaranteed results—something no ethical practitioner, spiritual or otherwise, can truly offer.

A critical red flag is certainty: promises of guaranteed love, forced reconciliation, instant wealth, or control over others’ free will.

Etsy’s Policies and the Problem of Claims

Etsy formally restricts certain types of claims, especially those related to medical, legal, or financial outcomes. However, enforcement is inconsistent. Many listings rely on carefully worded language such as:

• “For entertainment purposes”
• “Spiritual support only”
• “Results may vary”

These disclaimers protect the platform and seller, but they also signal that buyers should treat offerings as symbolic or experiential rather than literal solutions.

Why People Still Buy from Etsy Witches

Despite skepticism, demand continues to grow. Reasons include:

• Desire for meaning during uncertainty
• Dissatisfaction with organized religion
• Interest in ritual as a psychological tool
• Aesthetic appeal of spiritual objects
• Curiosity rather than belief

From a rational standpoint, rituals can function as focus mechanisms—ways to clarify goals, reduce anxiety, or create a sense of control. In this sense, Etsy witchcraft overlaps more with mindfulness, journaling, or placebo-driven self-help than with supernatural intervention.

Many sellers earn income not because magic “works,” but because storytelling, symbolism, and emotional resonance sell well online. This doesn’t automatically make them dishonest—but it does place their work firmly in the realm of commerce, not sacred authority.

How to Evaluate an Etsy Witch Listing Critically

If you’re browsing Etsy’s metaphysical category, consider these questions:

• Does the seller guarantee outcomes?
• Are descriptions vague or overly dramatic?
• Is fear used as a marketing tactic?
• Are prices aligned with the effort involved?
• Are claims framed as symbolic rather than literal?

Here’s the most important question — Why do you need Etsy witches at all when you can do it yourself? DIY magic is real, friends and neighbors! That’s what the ESP Lab is all about.

Throughout history, many cultures have imagined angel magic is real and accessible under the misguided view of angels as powerful intermediaries—beings who can be invoked, commanded, or persuaded through secret names, formulas, or rituals. In some mystical traditions outside Judaism, “angel magic” promises protection, knowledge, healing, or control over destiny.

The Talmud, however, takes a radically different position. While it fully affirms the existence of angels, it simultaneously empties angel-magic of any independent power or efficacy. From a Talmudic perspective, attempting to manipulate angels is not only theologically misguided—it is fundamentally futile.

To understand why, we must examine how the Talmud defines angels, power, and the nature of divine action.

First, a Brief Introduction to The Talmud

The Talmud is a written record of the Oral Torah—the teachings that G-d gave to Moses at Mount Sinai alongside the Written Torah (the Five Books of Moses) and transmitted orally for generations.

It explains how the commandments of the Torah are understood, applied, debated, and lived.

Angels Have No Independent Power

The most basic Talmudic principle undermining angel magic is that angels possess no autonomous authority.

The Talmud repeatedly portrays angels as messengers (mal’akhim), not decision-makers. They do not initiate action, alter decrees, or exercise discretion.

In Chagigah 16a, angels are described as beings who:

• Have no evil inclination
• Have no jealousy or rivalry
• Do not eat or reproduce
• Exist solely to carry out G-d’s will

This description removes the very foundation of angel magic. Magic assumes an entity with latent power that can be redirected or coerced. The Talmud insists that angels have no such surplus capacity. An angel does nothing unless commanded by G-d—and nothing more than what it is commanded.

An entity that cannot choose cannot be manipulated.

One Angel, One Mission—No Flexibility

A core Talmudic teaching appears in Sanhedrin 95b and Bava Metzia 86b:

“An angel does not perform two missions, and two angels do not perform one mission.”

This principle is decisive. Angels are task-specific, created or assigned for a single, narrowly defined function.

From this perspective:

• An angel of healing cannot bring wealth
• An angel of judgment cannot bring mercy
• An angel assigned to destruction cannot suddenly become protective

In this artistic depiction of the angels visiting Abraham, three angels were sent for three very specific, very different assignments:

The Archangel Rafael healed Abraham.

The Archangel Michael announced the birth of Isaac.

The Archangel Gabriel was sent to destroy the city of Sodom for its irredeemable sinful ways.

Neither them nor any other angel- then or now – can act on requests, prayers, angel magic, etc.

Angel magic presumes versatility. The Talmud denies it.

Trying to summon an angel for personal benefit is like trying to use a key that only opens one door—to open every door. The limitation is intrinsic, not procedural.

Angels Cannot Act Without Explicit Divine Authorization

The Talmud consistently emphasizes that angels must receive permission before acting, even when the action appears holy.

In Shabbat 88b–89a, when Moses ascends to receive the Torah, angels protest. Yet the moment G-d commands them to stand down, they immediately submit. They cannot touch Moses, argue further, or act independently.

Similarly, Chagigah 12b teaches that angels do not even sing praises until they are given permission from Above.

If angels cannot initiate worship without authorization, how much less can they respond to human incantations?

Angel magic presumes that secret knowledge—names, seals, formulas—can bypass divine will. The Talmud presents a universe where nothing bypasses divine will, least of all angels.

Angels Are Not Intermediaries for Prayer

A common assumption behind angel magic is that angels function as spiritual middlemen—receiving requests and delivering results. The Talmud explicitly rejects this model.

In Berakhot 60b, the Talmud rules that prayers should be directed only to G-d, not to angels, because angels:

• Do not understand human languages in the same way
• Do not possess authority to grant requests
• Are not proper recipients of supplication

This teaching is sharpened by later halakhic tradition, but its root is Talmudic: turning toward angels is ineffective at best and theologically dangerous at worst.

If prayer—an act sanctioned by G-d—cannot be directed to angels, then magical manipulation of angels is doubly empty.

Angel Magic Confuses Cause and Effect

The Talmudic worldview is relentlessly theocentric. Angels are effects, not causes.

In Avodah Zarah 55a, the Talmud criticizes those who attribute power to intermediaries rather than to G-d Himself. While the passage addresses idolatry, its logic applies equally to angel magic: assigning causal power to any being other than G-d is a category error.

Angels may appear to “do” things—but only because they are instruments of a higher decree. The real cause is always G-d.

Angel magic mistakes the tool for the source.

Even “Holy Names” Do Not Compel Angels

Some traditions claim that knowledge of divine or angelic names grants command over angels. The Talmud is strikingly silent on any legitimate human authority to compel angels through names.

On the contrary, Sanhedrin 38b–39a recounts traditions where angels are punished for assuming independence, underscoring that autonomy—even for angels—is forbidden.

If angels themselves cannot assert independence, then humans certainly cannot grant themselves authority over angels through ritual.

The Talmud’s silence here is itself a statement: there is no sanctioned mechanism for controlling angels.

The Human Error Behind Angel Magic

At its root, angel magic reflects a human discomfort with direct dependence on G-d.

The Talmud repeatedly insists that all outcomes—life, health, sustenance, wisdom—come directly from Heaven. Angels may be the delivery system, but they are never the address.

Attempting to work through angels rather than through G-d:

• Adds no efficiency
• Adds no power
• Adds no reliability

Why Angel Magic Is Not Just Futile—but Spiritually Misguided

From a Talmudic perspective, the real danger of angel magic is not that it “doesn’t work,” but that it misunderstands reality.

Reality is not governed by manipulable forces distributed among celestial beings. It is governed by a single, unified divine will.

Angels are not spiritual loopholes.

They are not cosmic bureaucrats.

They are not susceptible to pressure, persuasion, or ritual control.

They are obedience in motion.

Conclusion: Direct Relationship Replaces Angel Manipulation

The Talmud’s message is clear and consistent:

• Angels have no free will
• Angels have no independent power
• Angels cannot be compelled
• Angels cannot mediate prayer
• Angels cannot override divine decree

Therefore, angel magic is futile.

Judaism does not offer a technique for controlling the heavens. It offers something far more radical: a direct relationship with G-d, unmediated and unmanipulated.

In that worldview, the greatest spiritual power is not secret knowledge—but humility, prayer, repentance, and ethical action.

Angels obey G-d.

Humans are meant to choose G-d.

Trying to command angels misses the point entirely.

Going further, I’ll show you that there is no magic, actually, to magical visualization.

What Is Magic?

Magic, in the metaphysical or occult sense, is the art and/or science of causing change in accordance with one’s will. This classic definition, attributed to British magician Aleister Crowley, highlights two key ideas:

1. Magic is intentional.
2. Magic is about producing results—whether those results are internal (emotional clarity, self-transformation) or external (a new job, love, healing, protection).

Modern magical practices can include rituals, affirmations, spellwork, meditation, symbols, candles, herbs, and more. But all of these are tools—they gain power through the mind behind them.

That’s where visualization comes in.

What Is Visualization?

Visualization is the practice of forming clear, detailed mental images of what you want to experience or become. Unlike passive daydreaming, it is focused, intentional, and emotionally charged.

In magical visualization is often used to:

• Empower a spell
• Create a protective aura
• Connect with spiritual forces
• Manifest desires into reality (mundane translation: Obtain a future goal presently out of reach)
• Strengthen the energy of rituals or talismans
• Align your inner world with your outer goals

Visualization bridges the inner and outer world. It’s the energetic blueprint from which physical outcomes can arise.

Magical Visualization is The Fusion of Art and Science.

Magic involves both symbol and intention. Visualization charges both of these with life.

But is it magic? Here’s what legendary author Napoleon Hill had to say in chapter 14 of his seminal business book Think and Grow Rich:

“The sixth sense defies description! It cannot be described to a person who has not mastered the other principles of this philosophy, because such a person has no knowledge, and no experience with which the sixth sense may be compared. Understanding of the sixth sense comes only by meditation through mind development from within. The sixth sense probably is the medium of contact between the finite mind of man and Infinite Intelligence, and for this reason, it is a mixture of both the mental and the spiritual.” – Page 312

1. Creating the Inner Reality

Visualization allows anybody to create a powerful inner experience of their desire. When you clearly picture what you want—whether it’s love, success, health, or clarity—you activate your subconscious mind and spiritual will to begin aligning reality with that vision.

This is often the true “engine” behind spells. The herbs, candles, and words are symbolic tools. But it is your mental image—energized with emotion and belief—that actually fuels the magic.

2. Charging Rituals with Energy

In ceremonial or ritual magic, visualization is used to give life to the imagined forces or symbols being called. For example, when drawing a magical circle, the practitioner may visualize a glowing sphere of energy surrounding them. When calling upon a spirit or deity, the magician might visualize a light or form taking shape before them.

Without visualization, these actions are hollow. With it, they become dynamic and alive.

3. Programming the Subconscious

Much of magical work involves reprogramming the subconscious. Visualization speaks directly to the subconscious in the language it understands: image and emotion.

If you regularly visualize yourself as confident, powerful, and successful, your subconscious begins to accept this as truth—and your behavior, habits, and perception of the world start to shift accordingly. Stand still and visualize a beam of light coming from above your head, flowing down into your body. Then, imagine that light expanding around you into a glowing circle or sphere—your shield of protection. See it shimmering with strength, repelling all harm or negativity.

During spellcasting, pause and vividly picture the end result as if it has already happened. Imagine holding the object, feeling the love, or experiencing the change. This moment of focused visualization “seals” the spell with mental energy.

Visualization in Different Magical Traditions

Visualization is not unique to any one tradition. It’s a universal magical tool found across cultures and systems:

• Wicca uses visualization in casting circles, drawing down the moon, and charging tools with energy.
• Hermeticism employs visualization in pathworking through the Tree of Life.
• Chaos Magicians often use sigils and visual symbols to access the subconscious and reprogram reality.
• Shamanic Practices include vision journeys where the practitioner meets spirit guides or power animals through inner imagery.
• Eastern Practices such as Tibetan Buddhism use visualization of deities, mandalas, and light to transform consciousness.

Wherever you find magic, you will find visualization.

Is Magical Visualization Magic at All?

Famous founding father of self-improvement Dr. Maxwell Maltz doesn’t think so but easily understands why that could be construed…

“Successful men and women have, since the beginning of time, used “mental pictures,” and “rehearsal practice,” to achieve success. Napoléon, for example, “practiced” soldiering in his imagination for many years before he ever went on an actual battlefield. Webb and Morgan in their book Making the Most of Your Life tell us that “the notes Napoléon made from his readings during these years of study filled, when printed, four hundred pages. He imagined himself as a commander, and drew maps of the island of Corsica showing where he would place various defenses, making all his calculations with mathematical precision.” Conrad Hilton imagined himself operating a hotel long before he ever bought one. • Be Specific: Don’t just imagine “success.” Picture a specific moment—signing a contract, hugging a loved one, walking across a stage.
• Use All Senses: Don’t only see—hear, feel, smell, and touch the result.
• Stay Calm: A relaxed body makes for a powerful mind. Meditate or breathe deeply before beginning.
• Feel It Real: Emotional engagement is key. Feel the gratitude, joy, or empowerment of your vision.
• Practice Often: Just like magic, visualization is a skill. The more you use it, the more powerful it becomes.

Final Thoughts: Visualization Is Everyday Magic

Your mental theater (also known as your imagination or your mind’s eye) is where your new realities premiere.

Lights. Camera. Action! Then grab some popcorn and get ready for the red carpet.  Dare I say red magic carpet?

Visualization is the link between your inner world and your outer world. It’s the magical act of seeing with the mind’s eye, feeling with the heart, and choosing to believe in your own creative power.

So light a candle. Close your eyes. Picture your dream life. And know that in that moment, you are doing real magic.

I’ve literally grown up with Uncle Ozzy since the early 1980s so I’m qualified to write this Ozzy Osbourne tribute.  Let’s start out with the good news; Ozzy Osbourne still lives in our hearts and minds.  Ozzy has been a living legend for decades and that’s not changing any time soon.  For those in the ESP/Psychic/magic circles, his name is right up there with Pan, Puck, Bast, Zeus, Thor, etc. for what is conjured in the mind of most mortals who say or even think his name.

I’m not the first one to say that thoughts are things.  The accumulated power of tens of millions of thoughts mostly positive over the decades confers upon Ozzy godlike status no different than the comparatively popular Zeus and Odin mythological gods. Let’s include Al Manning’s own understanding of Ishtar in the same time frame.

Factoring in the world population at about 600 BCE as 200 million (estimates only, of course) Ozzy Osbourne’s own relative popularity – modern day – as measured in thoughtforms puts him in the top tier of revered entities right up-there with Odin, Zeus, Ishtar, etc.

Zooming in on Ancient Greece the total population was 5 million 700 BCE.  How many of them worshipped Zeus, Apollo, Athena, Themesis, etc.  All of them? No. The vast majority? Likely,  That’s millions of people pumping their energy – via their worship – into a pantheon of false gods.

If you run the same numbers for other mythological pantheons a similar tale is told.

Are there more Ozzy fans today? I’ll bet there are.  Millions of die hard fans “going fucking crazy” at sold-out arenas, stadiums and other venues.  I’ll bet the energy whipped up at any live event dwarfs the best Zeus himself could have done in his best day.  Then there are the many, many more passive Ozzy fans; they listen to his music, see him on TV, etc and smile.  More energy for Ozzy.

A very real Ozzy is a storehouse of power who died with more power – which still grows on a minute-by-minute basis – than fake old Zeus ever had.  The popular term “gods of rock”, “rock gods”, etc takes on new meaning.

Here’s the clincher; John Michael Osborne was larger than life and REALLY existed which cannot be saiid of the legions of fictional deities spanning every pantheon since the dawn of time.  Yet the accumulated thoughtform energy racked up over the years by him in the modern age eclipses the gods of old.

One song shines through for me upon the loss of my first wife Amanda Gomez Sherman some years ago.

No Ozzy Osbourne tribute would be complete without saying how REAL Ozzy was. Relatable.  The New York Times obituaryThe New York Times obituary spells it all out. His last noteworthy song says it all in the title and fully explained in the lyrics.

Al Manning assembled the ESP Lab spirit band many decades ago and it’s been unchanged ever since.  I’m seriously considering adding Ozzy to the band when I become president. He’s known all about bands for most of his life and brings more power to the table than every other honored entity enrolled. The topper is – he lived and died with a sense of humor bundled with humility and love. Like so many of us he battled his demons and came out on top at the end of it all.

OCTOBER HARVEST NEWS!!

I sent a version of this letter out a few weeks ago to a few Lab members… I am going to modify and use again, as we are on the same theme of PEACE, PROTECTION, POWER NOW with prosperity!     

Al Manning used to say, “ILLIGITIMI NON CARBORUNDUM”, which was his pet phony Latin Phrase for “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.” One way to transcend is to have FUN! FUN brightens your chakras and chases away evil. Another method is “TUNE INTO THE BEAUTY OF NATURE!!”  Al Manning in his light course said, “We all remember the legend of the “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.” That’s a gross understatement! The secrets of life itself are wrapped up in that rainbow. 

PEACE: Today we tune into GREEN AS THE MIDDLE COLOR OF THE RAINBOW– THE POINT OF BALANCE AND PEACE. The Psalmist gives us a delicious feeling of PEACE with his words of green pastures and still waters. The color of lush vegetation always brings us an aura of peace, comfort and opulence. And this is no accident! Peace is to be found at the point of balance, the center of gravity, the midpoint.”   Green is the color we are using for our Light meditation for fall.

LOVE & PROSPERITY: USE SPIRIT POWER TO ENHANCE YOUR COLOR MAGICK– Our Merry Spirit Band is made up of ETP’s (Energy Transforming Personalities) that bring each color to life. Today we focus on the GREEN ray: Osiris, ancient Lord of LIFE, DEATH, NATURE, Barley & Beer– Osiris was mentioned in Al’s ISHTAR MAGICK series as the GREEN Energy Transforming Personality. When Al moved to Texas he liked PAN for the GREEN ray. Other ancient personalities that can be utilized to invoke the GREEN light of love, growth and PROSPERITY are: Hiawatha, Ezmarelda, and OSTARA. The heart is the center for the GREEN LIGHT OF LOVE!  Today is a good time to FEEL LOVE in your heart, LOVE is powerful and protective & can bring peace, protection and prosperity.

FUN: One of our members writes in that he had a fun vision of Pan. SC writes us from Colorado: 

“I saw all the problems all at once, like fuzzy balls all around me.  Pan was saying all you have to do is strip-away the stress. Then the music began… the striper tune, with horns blazing and with tassels spinning! Pan focused on kicking the problem-fuzz balls away– with each kick in time to the music. This was sure a lot of fun and was easy to see the worries bounce away.”  As the Nature Spirits sing and play, let us “feel our problems fade away!!”

In the early Greek language, Spirit was defined as “the breath through Pan’s pipes.”  Listen to nature for inspiration.  Here I have the birds singing daily, including the gaggling of a flock of nearby Canadian geese, and hawks crying.  Find a personal place to hear the sounds of Nature, Spirit playing through Pan’s pipes as we celebrate being alive as a great gift.  Count your blessings, with gratitude and FUN, as we plod through the challenge of your days!!
